Chapter 6
Theyâre done at the third house, but having trouble leaving because the mother of one of the sick children, Hannah, doesnât seem to want Evan to leave. Ever since Evan got here, sheâs been flirting with him and completely ignoring Rene, which pisses Evan off. Even if sheâs attracted to him, that doesnât mean she should be rude to Rene.
Reneâs already out and in her front yard, and Evanâs in the doorway. Jane Turner will just not stop talking to him, batting her eyelashes like a schoolgirl.
âYou can come back any time. Maybe tonight?â Jane suggests.
âIâm sorry, I have a lot of work to do,â Evan says, not mentioning that any free time he does have when heâs not working on curing the children, he spends with Rene, getting fucked through the mattress till they both fall asleep, like last night.
âWell, thatâs a shame. You know everyone needs a break. Iâd like to cook you dinner, to thank you for all youâre doing for my little girl,â Jane says, even though sheâs hardly even mentioned Hannah or her treatment.
âYou donât have to thank me. I really need to go now,â Evan says. He takes a step away, and Jane grabs his arm and starts the fakest crying Evan has ever seen before she collapses against him.
âIâm so worried about my baby. I just need someone to hold me.â Jane sobs theatrically.
Evan pats her back and then steps back awkwardly. âWeâll be in touch if we find anything.â He hurries away from Jane and to the car, where Reneâs waiting, and he doesnât look amused.
âWhy are you pissed off?â Evan asks as he gets in the car.
âYou smell like her,â Rene says as he starts driving.
âYouâre mad at me because a woman hugged me. You realize how ridiculous that is, right?â Evan rolls his eyes.
âYes,â Rene admits, so at least he knows heâs being a fool.
âIt didnât mean anything. Iâm not attracted to her,â Evan says reasonably.
âBut she wanted you. I could tell. People living in space could see that. And now her scent is all over you,â Rene complains.
âPull the car over somewhere,â Evan orders.
âFine.â Rene pulls over on the highway looking pissed off.
âCome here.â Evan beckons as cars speed by.
âWhy?â Rene asks.
âWe can make out till I smell like you instead of Miss Turner,â Evan suggests.
âWe canât do that. If you smell like me, other Felis will ask questions.â Rene sighs, sounding frustrated.
âGive me your jacket then,â Evan says, stripping off his own and throwing it into the back seat.
âMy jacket is way too big for you,â Rene replies, not moving.
âExactly, itâll be obvious that I borrowed it for some reason, and itâll give me a reason to smell like you, at least above the belt. Not that I plan to let anyone sniff my crotch.â Evan grins. He doesnât want to be obvious about it, but heâs kind of pleased that Rene is jealous of Jane.
Rene unbuckles his seatbelt and takes off his jacket. Evan slips into it.
