Chapter 6

They’re done at the third house, but having trouble leaving because the mother of one of the sick children, Hannah, doesn’t seem to want Evan to leave. Ever since Evan got here, she’s been flirting with him and completely ignoring Rene, which pisses Evan off. Even if she’s attracted to him, that doesn’t mean she should be rude to Rene.

Rene’s already out and in her front yard, and Evan’s in the doorway. Jane Turner will just not stop talking to him, batting her eyelashes like a schoolgirl.

“You can come back any time. Maybe tonight?” Jane suggests.

“I’m sorry, I have a lot of work to do,” Evan says, not mentioning that any free time he does have when he’s not working on curing the children, he spends with Rene, getting fucked through the mattress till they both fall asleep, like last night.

“Well, that’s a shame. You know everyone needs a break. I’d like to cook you dinner, to thank you for all you’re doing for my little girl,” Jane says, even though she’s hardly even mentioned Hannah or her treatment.

“You don’t have to thank me. I really need to go now,” Evan says. He takes a step away, and Jane grabs his arm and starts the fakest crying Evan has ever seen before she collapses against him.

“I’m so worried about my baby. I just need someone to hold me.” Jane sobs theatrically.

Evan pats her back and then steps back awkwardly. “We’ll be in touch if we find anything.” He hurries away from Jane and to the car, where Rene’s waiting, and he doesn’t look amused.

“Why are you pissed off?” Evan asks as he gets in the car.

“You smell like her,” Rene says as he starts driving.

“You’re mad at me because a woman hugged me. You realize how ridiculous that is, right?” Evan rolls his eyes.

“Yes,” Rene admits, so at least he knows he’s being a fool.

“It didn’t mean anything. I’m not attracted to her,” Evan says reasonably.

“But she wanted you. I could tell. People living in space could see that. And now her scent is all over you,” Rene complains.

“Pull the car over somewhere,” Evan orders.

“Fine.” Rene pulls over on the highway looking pissed off.

“Come here.” Evan beckons as cars speed by.

“Why?” Rene asks.

“We can make out till I smell like you instead of Miss Turner,” Evan suggests.

“We can’t do that. If you smell like me, other Felis will ask questions.” Rene sighs, sounding frustrated.

“Give me your jacket then,” Evan says, stripping off his own and throwing it into the back seat.

“My jacket is way too big for you,” Rene replies, not moving.

“Exactly, it’ll be obvious that I borrowed it for some reason, and it’ll give me a reason to smell like you, at least above the belt. Not that I plan to let anyone sniff my crotch.” Evan grins. He doesn’t want to be obvious about it, but he’s kind of pleased that Rene is jealous of Jane.

Rene unbuckles his seatbelt and takes off his jacket. Evan slips into it.
